Local legend and Podio Superstar, Chloe interviewed local business owner, Paul Butcher, the landlord of the city’s Stanley Arms. Here’s how their meeting panned out…
What is the history of The Stanley Arms? I know that it has been in Preston for as long as I can remember!
Well, this all depends on how far back you want to go! This pub’s been here since 1852 when the development of the Harris museum and flag market led to the previous Stanley Arms being replaced. We have the original Guinell for horses, cellaring and exterior of that time. The Stanley Arms was the local pub and brewery of the Stanley family / Earl of Derby title that date back to the 1100s. The crest we use as our logo is the original Stanley shield from 1139 and the family famously produced Lord Stanley, kingmaker in the wars of the roses, one of the first Prime Ministers before the Disraeli government (statue in Avenham park), the MP who launched the Pals Brigades in WWI and the famous Canadian Ice hockey trophy ‘The Stanley Cup’.
How long have you been the Licencee there and what is your background?
I’ve been the custodian of The Stanley since July 2017, after 20 years working in hospitality and teaching in Preston and the Northwest. I feel very lucky to have inherited a pub with such a good Soulful atmosphere and a lot of love from Preston.
What changes have you made at The Stanley Arms since you have been there?
With the Brewery we’ve tried to modernise the Stanley, whilst keeping to its classical heritage pub roots. The changes have been huge, from getting quality beers, spirits, ales and homemade food back to our wide gin and cocktail menu. We’ve re-developed the function room to one of the best free to hire venues in town and offer a great atmosphere at any time of day. Whether it’s for lunch, evening, pre guildhall, weekend disco, karaoke or northern soul nights, we have great music, great patrons and a great atmosphere.
Do you run any special events there – for example themed nights?
Loads! Our regulars are Friday nights soul and disco from the 70s to current with Chris XL. Saturdays Chris is back and Soul Boy Sumners Plays Northern Soul in the Soul suite. Sundays and Thursdays it’s much loved Rockin’ Roy on the Karaoke and disco hits. In addition we hold ‘Ladies who Lunch and Learn’ and ‘Food for Thought in Preston’ – fantastic networking and personal learning experiences, socialist meetings, pre and post guild hall parties, Burlesque, meetings, sports functions, retirement, birthday and leaving parties, stag and hen dos and so on….
Tell us more about the function room?
Free to hire we have an awesome function room with it’s own bar, multimedia, sound system, PA, and washrooms. Your function is absolutely your own and with our flexible – can do attitude the only limit is your imagination!
What age-ranges / groups of people are you trying to appeal to, or would you say that the pub has something to offer to all?
I’d say the pub has something to offer for all – whether it’s ales or cocktails, old school disco or your own event. We have people from their 20’s to their 80’s – Families, Dog Walkers, Office workers and Shoppers in and it’s the laid back – unpretentious atmosphere of The Stanley that keeps people coming back.
I know that you serve food. What are the most popular items on your menu?
Our food is fantastic and regularly gets 5 star ratings on Google and other sites. All Homemade we produce everything from fresh on site. Our most popular items are our pub classics such as Hot Pot, Meat and Veg Chilli, Fish and Chips, Burgers, Wraps, Baguettes and Sandwiches. We also do a vegetarian and Vegan specials menu and our Hearty Lentil Stew and Halloumi, Spinach and Pesto burger are regular favourites.
Are there any promotions on offer that you want to tell our readers about?
Yes we do loads! We do a food special every day – £3 BLT on Monday, £3 Jacket on Tuesday, and Ocean pie Wednesday, Chilli Thursday, Fish and Chips Friday, Burger Saturday, and Hotpot Sunday al for £5. We do happy hour on Karaoke nights and Friday 2-4-1- Cocktails and £2.00 glasses of Prosecco! We do £3.00 house doubles all the time, and there’s more in the pipeline!
Is there anything else that you would like to tell the people of Preston?
Just to come down and give us a chance. The pub was a bit run down before we took over and we now do great food, drinks and service. If you read any of our reviews, visit our website, or just pop by I’m sure you’ll have a great time.
