“…reached out to many marginalised in society; gave a voice to those who might not have known how to speak, gave confidence to those who didn’t dare speak up”
The first person to receive an acknowledgement is an individual who reached out to many marginalised in society; gave a voice to those who might not have known how to speak, gave confidence to those who didn’t dare speak up.
Joan Behar developed & launched Reading the World in 2012-2013, a creative writing programme which empowered some of Preston’s most vulnerable. Joan reached out to victims of abuse, ex-off enders, members of the LGBT community, the disabled, recovering addicts & pretty much anyone who wanted to explore writing. Her workshops involved a beautiful mix of people, from all walks of life, her feedback was strength-based & her approach, always, amazingly enthusiastic.
As if encouraging & aiding people to write wasn’t enough, she organised a filled-to capacity showcase event at the end of the first programme where each participant performed their work. Feedback from the evening was that it was ‘compelling, inspiring & emotional’ The American beam of enthusiasm helped so many local people, in so many ways, during her time in Lancashire. The programme has gone on to help educate professionals too.
“She encouraged, she inspired and she insisted that anything was possible…”
Sadly, in our fi rst edition we’re already breaking the rules. Joan passed away in 2014 under deeply upsetting circumstances. Some of us wish we had expressed our love & admiration for her when she was with us in person. She left behind an entourage of community members, work colleagues & friends, all of whom she truly inspired. It is thanks to Joan, that Podio are establishing the youinspire section of the site.
With love, your RTW family xxx
