On Visiting the Samaritans Charity Shop on Plungington Road, I was greeted with a very friendly smile and a hello from Paula who has worked for the charity for 7 years. She had seen a sign in the window asking for volunteers and, knowing people who had needed their help in the past, she wanted to help this great charity.
When I first walked into the shop, I noticed an open Jigsaw on a table. I asked Paula about this. She explained that if people want to come into the shop to have a hot drink, (for a small donation) chat or chill with their drink and do the jigsaw they are welcome to. What a great idea, I thought.
She informs me that the charity used to have a shop in Ashton but decided they wanted a smaller, independent venue that would have a higher foot fall. On 18th October 2018, they consequently moved to Plungington Road – and it has certainly worked. Although everything is going well, they do need volunteers of any age and ability.
They are open every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 – 4pm, although their ultimate aim is to open 6 days a week. They are always in need of donations, including electrical items.
To help the community, they planned to put a board at the back of the shop with helpline numbers and information with respect to what is going on in the community.
The money raised goes to Preston District Samaritans in St Wilfred Street Preston. Profits from this shop also mean the 24 hour phone lines can be kept open for those in need of help.
If you would like to contact the Samaritans, their confidential phone number is 116123 . Alternatively, you can text 07725909090 any time.
